Work Experience, Stepping Out on Site

Posted on March 15, 2018 in Careers and employment

Winvic are dedicated to promoting the construction industry and actively look for ways to engage and encourage individuals to consider a career within the industry, not long ago our very own Quantity Surveyor Olivia Radford, took the stage at Nottingham Trent University’s Women in the Built Environment event; where she offered female students practical advice and encouragement to seize a construction role. Following that three more Winvic employees volunteered to take part in the Go Construct, “Pride and Joy Campaign” that ran alongside national apprenticeship week, speaking about and promoting their chosen construction careers.

So, when a mother of a sixth form student from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Technology College, approached Winvic to see if there was an opportunity for her son Niall to partake in some on site work experience at Newhall Square Birmingham, Winvic were delighted to assist.

Winvic and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Technology College were able to join forces and Niall arrived on site to experience not only three days on the ground with our Engineers but two days working alongside our Project Manager in the office, on the Newhall Square project which includes the construction of two new apartment blocks and refurbishment of an existing warehouse. Niall learnt the importance of communication on site and also the different roles in play and how it all fits together to complete a build.

“My time on site has gave me the confidence to speak to people with more confidently and I really enjoyed my time working with the site engineers”

Niall, work experience student

Niall said his first experience on site has given him “an insight into construction and my family history as my grandad worked on building Birmingham when he came here in the late 1950s and my dad a joiner who is now a Site Manager. My time on site has gave me the confidence to speak to people with more confidently and I really enjoyed my time working with the site engineers” Likewise, our site staff thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to give something back, working with Niall for the week, they stated that Niall “has shown great maturity and self-drive to learn fast on site, wonderful communications skills in a very challenging environment and we would welcome Niall back to see how the project progress in the future”.

Winvic will continue to work closely with local schools and colleges in the area and hope to give more students the opportunity to engage and consider a career within the construction industry.
