BLOG: TOM PARR – APPRENTICESHIP NO. 2 FOR AN M&E MANAGER OF THE FUTURE

Posted on March 13, 2019 in Blog

During National Apprenticeships Week we introduced you to Laura Higgs, who is studying for a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Team Leading alongside her role as Building Manuals Manager. Today, as part of a series of articles looking at the range of roles and education opportunities we offer, we’re sharing the story of another one of our learning-hungry employees with you. Tom Parr is one of our Mechanical and Electrical Coordinators, has been in the role for approximately a year and began his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Building Services apprenticeship in September.

After I left school, around four years ago, I was lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship where I gained a vocational qualification in electrical installation, but not long after I received my certificate I was unfortunately made redundant. I started to look for vacancies and my dad, who has has worked for Winvic as a subcontractor for quite a while, also offered to speak to Mechanical and Electrical Manager, Lee Evans. To my surprise there was an opening at Winvic, I had an interview with Lee – who is now my manager – and it wasn’t long before I was asked to join the team. At this point I was also given the go ahead to find a suitable course that would raise my levels of mechanical knowledge… on to apprenticeship number two!

“I started my HND at Leicester College in September, which is made up of a weekly study day and the rest of my time is spent on the job. It’s helping me gain the technical knowledge required to fulfil my job role, and this first year is covering a lot of general information, such as the differences between various sectors. The course goes through all aspects of mechanical and electrical installation design and commissioning techniques which I am applying my work, currently on plots two and four at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway. I work closely with Lee, who is always on hand to help, and other senior members of the teams, but I have different responsibilities, such as meeting with subcontractors and consultants, planning what the next programme steps are and the best way to achieve them.

“It’s very interesting to learn about everything from a 360 degree, main contractor’s point of view – my previous role was with a subcontractor – and how to build relationships with clients and suppliers, as well as the mechanical side of the job. I’m enjoying being out on site and in the classroom, learning as I go each week, but I can’t say it isn’t hard work! I hope that by 2021 I’ve gained the knowledge needed to move up a step and become a mechanical and electrical design manager.”

While a number of apprenticeship enquiries come via current staff members, like Tom’s did, we welcome applications from people anywhere in the UK, all year round.
