DC2 Prologis Park Dunstable wins prestigious BREEAM Regional Award

Posted on March 7, 2018 in Awards & Accreditations

DC2, Prologis Park Dunstable has won a prestigious BREEAM Regional Award 2018 – Western Europe.

The annual BREEAM Awards recognise building projects and professionals with extraordinary achievements in sustainability in the UK, and in countries across the globe from China to Brazil. The judges felt DC2 deserved recognition for its potential benefits in highlighting how to make important sustainability improvements in the mature industrial sector, as constructing and operating distribution facilities significantly impacts the environment.

Global recognition of this kind is a further endorsement of Winvic’s already excellent track record in the construction of low carbon, energy efficient buildings.”

Scott McDermott, Senior Design Manager

The state-of-the-art 358,000 sq ft distribution centre achieved BREEAM Outstanding ratings at both the Design and Post-Construction stages and was also shortlisted for the Commercial Post-Construction Award.

Developed and owned by Prologis, Winvic Construction were the contractor, Stephen George and Partners were the architect and Eight Associates were the BREEAM Assessor.

Prologis uses BREEAM certification to measure the environmental performance of its developments. At DC2, operational carbon emissions were cut by 51% (in comparison to 2013 Building Regulations), which equates to a similar reduction in operational energy costs for the tenant.

It is the first industrial building to be assessed ‘Outstanding’ under the BREEAM 2014 guidelines. The accreditation of DC2 follows that of the adjacent building DC1 Prologis Park Dunstable, also constructed by Winvic, which also achieved BREEAM 2011 ‘Outstanding’ and helped inform the design and construction of DC2. Its accreditation confirmed Prologis Park Dunstable as the first large-scale distribution park to be fully certified as BREEAM ‘Outstanding’.

Scott McDermott, Senior Design Manager said: “We are extremely proud to have constructed this exemplar sustainable distribution centre for our client Prologis. Global recognition of this kind is a further endorsement of Winvic’s already excellent track record in the construction of low carbon, energy efficient buildings.”

“We wanted to set a new standard for buildings in the industrial logistics sector and DC2 was designed to demonstrate that a logistics facility can reduce the customer’s energy costs and minimise environmental impact,” said Martin Cooper, Vice President, Project Management for Prologis UK. “Throughout the design and construction process, Prologis worked closely with Winvic and the project team to achieve Outstanding ratings at both the design and post-construction stages.”

Winvic has an excellent track record in the construction of low carbon, energy efficient buildings having delivered the first ever BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rated industrial building for Rolls-Royce at Heathrow in 2012. This was the first construction project in the UK to achieve a Post Completion Review certificate of ‘Outstanding’ under the BRE’s challenging 2011 benchmark standards. Winvic also delivered the first ever BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rated education building, Suscon Academy in Dartford.

In the last two years, we have delivered 5 ‘Outstanding’, 11 ‘Excellent’ and 61 ‘Very Good’ buildings and three net zero buildings on our Rushden Lakes retail and leisure scheme for LXB Retail Properties and The Crown Estate.
