SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway in line for 2019 Health, Safety and Wellbeing Initiative

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor specialising in turnkey solutions for industrial, build-to-rent, student accommodation and commercial projects, has been shortlisted for yet another award. The British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA), which are in association with New Civil Engineer magazine and Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), have included SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG) in its shortlist for the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Initiative category.

The health, safety and wellbeing award that will recognise best practice in project delivery, an initiative that serves as an exemplar to the industry and a project team that understands the importance of creating a safe and healthy working environment will be announced on 9 October at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. Winvic will give a presentation to a panel of BCIA judges in July about the completed second phase at SLPEMG and the welfare measures taken that kept 700 operatives safe across the 700 acre ‘inland port’. A coordinated and innovative approach to key project challenges was employed to ensure safe delivery of one of the largest civils and infrastructure, multi-agency developments in Europe. It resulted in only one RIDDOR reportable in 2017 and no incidents in 2018.

The three year, Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project comprises earthworks, remediation, infrastructure – including challenging water and gas diversions and works to the M1 – civil engineering and 6 million sq ft modern industrial warehousing.

Winvic Managing Director, Simon Hunt, said: “The recognition Winvic has already received in the first six months of 2019 – by being shortlisted for seven prominent industry awards – is incredible, but really it evidences the hard work of every member of staff, subcontractor and consultants.

“SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway is a stand-out project for a number of reasons. Not only is our approach to health and safety, site management and operatives’ wellbeing significant and innovative, but the project itself included a range of unique complexities; from restrictions due to the adjacent airport and motorway, to multi-agency working requirements to the site’s vast size, equivalent to the area of the City of London.

“The legacy left by the project on Winvic is vast and our transformative health and safety initiative at SLPEMG has ultimately made countless people’s lives safer and healthier – I’d like to thank all involved in the project and wish them the best of luck for the big reveal on the awards night.”

Kate Bedson, Senior Development Director for National Logistics at SEGRO, said: “Health and Safety is a high priority for SEGRO and it’s great to see Winvic being shortlisted for this achievement.”
