Winvic Shortlisted for Two CN Awards and a WICE Award

Posted on March 27, 2019 in Awards & Accreditations

Leading publication, Construction News, has announced the shortlist for its annual CN Awards that celebrate the best in the industry, and last Wednesday the European Women in Construction and Engineering (WICE) also published finalists’ names. Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor specialising in turnkey solutions for industrial, build-to-rent, student accommodation and commercial projects, has been shortlisted in two CN Award categories – Contractor of the Year and Health, Safety and Wellbeing Excellence Project for SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG). Compliance Manager, Jackie Hall, has been announced as one of eight in the running for WICE Best Woman in Health and Safety.

A total 107 companies will compete on 13 May for the 21 CN Awards over five days of face-to-face judging at the Construction News offices in London. The CN Awards take place on 11 July at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Jackie will also meet the WICE Award judges on 25 April for a panel interview, and winners will be announced at the awards dinner on 21 May.

The CN Awards Contractor of the Year category seeks to recognise the most outstanding main contractor with a UK turnover of over £500m, in the calendar year 2018. Judges will be looking for evidence of contribution to brilliant projects, innovation, quality of work and a forward-looking approach to the industry.

In its award entry, Winvic illustrated that the company is not dictated to by industry standards nor influenced by its competitors and should be recognised for its fundamental principle of simply ‘getting it right’. It is the vision, focus and people behind the numbers that make Winvic an outstanding contractor.

  • Five main operating sectors: completed 30 projects and started 42 in 2018
  • Nourished relationships: 52 clients and 279 suppliers in 2018
  • Cared for employees: grew workforce substantially and had a 93.2% staff retention rate
  • 1 million more man hours used but reduced its RIDDOR Average Frequency Rate to 0.16

The SLPEMG infrastructure phase has been announced as a finalist in the Safety and Wellbeing Excellence Project category, and acknowledges our construction and HSEQ teams, who have shown fantastic commitment to health and safety on the project, and achieved exemplary standards.

The 700 acre ‘inland port’ site is adjacent to East Midlands Airport and the M1, and involved challenging service diversions. The three year, Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project comprises earthworks, remediation, infrastructure, civil engineering and 6 million sq. ft. modern industrial warehousing. Winvic employed a coordinated and innovative approach to key challenges to safely deliver Phase 2, one of the largest civils and infrastructure, multi-agency developments in Europe. The legacy left by the project on Winvic is vast – it has not only brought about transformative H&S changes, but for many of the companies within the main contractor’s supply chain, ultimately making people’s lives safer and healthier. SLPEMG Phase 2 – a project with 700 operatives on site on peak days – had only one RIDDOR reportable in 2017 and no incidents in 2018.

The WICE Awards are designed to find the most exemplary women within construction and engineering across Europe to recognise the support and contribution women make to the industries. Jackie Hall has been a Winvic employee since 2001, when there were just 8 employees. She showed interest in health and safety from early days as a general administrator and in 2007, when health and safety paperwork was within her remit, Jackie stood out as someone special. Her enthusiasm, insightfulness and aptitude has led her to her current role as Compliance Manager, now one of 300 employees. Within her role, Jackie assesses and audits projects and supply chain for compliance, manages the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Partnership and is our internal CCS auditor, is responsible for ISO Certifications, is our Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme Champion.

Winvic Managing Director, Simon Hunt, said: “To be selected as a finalist for Contractor of the Year really is a testament to our staff, suppliers, consultants and clients; they are the great people who really make our business tick. Our culture ‘The Winvic Way’ is based on our core values – respect, loyalty, honesty, challenging and questioning, passion, pride, tenacity and drive; above all doing it right! We are delighted this is being recognised by experts in the industry.”

“Our innovative approach to health and safety, and site management – in the face of a range of restrictions and complexities, multi-agency working and supply chain management – makes SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway a stand-out project; and Jackie Hall is one of our tenacious team members who is always striving to make a difference in the workplace.”
