Winvic Recognised For Health And Safety Excellence As Award Finalist

Posted on March 4, 2019 in Awards & Accreditations

Winvic Construction Ltd, a multidisciplinary main contractor that continually invests in maintaining and improving its exemplary HSEQ performance, has earned its place across three categories in the finals of The Safety and Health Excellence Awards. The shortlists were revealed by Health and Safety Matters following a record number – over 200 – of entries, and Winvic is hoping to win one or more of the prizes at the awards night, on 10 April.

“I was already enormously proud of what my team has achieved in the last couple of years, but having external validation is great feeling. Whether Adam, Adrian and the East Midlands Gateway project win in their respective categories or not, our exceptional record illustrates our commitment to keeping operatives and communities safe, and the most important thing is we will continue achieving the highest standards.”

Ian Goodhead, HSEQ Director at Winvic

Best Health and Safety in Construction – SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, Phase 2

Due to site area, breadth of work and engineering dilemmas, SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway provided fresh and complex challenges. We aimed to safely and successfully deliver the second phase of one of the largest earth moving, multi-agency developments in Europe by focussing on:

  • Effective Team Structure. Winvic appointed a dedicated on-site H&S Manager, a project first for Winvic. The goal was for Adrian Bracken to integrate within the project team and better understand the needs on the ground.
  • Health, Safety and Wellbeing. Endeavouring to create a new vision fitting to a vast workforce, where sub-contractor training and 360-degree health awareness would be provided, as well as achieving an immaculate safety record with low average incident rates.
  • Cross-agency Working. With SLPEMG and M1 Smart Motorway works running concurrently and East Midlands Airport adjacent, many activities would be carefully planned considering safety first, around traffic management and air restriction zones.

Health and Safety Matters, Health and Safety Manager of the Year – Adrian Bracken, Senior HSEQ Manager

One of three senior HSEQ managers, Adrian has worked at Winvic since July 2015. In February 2017, his role changed to a dedicated, on-site H&S Manager at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway; a 700 acre project comprising earthworks, highways, rail and warehouse construction. He assimilated within the project team to better understand needs, and shaped his role based on Winvic’s ‘doing it right’ ethos.

Few H&S Managers could care for 700 operatives across a 700 acre site, and negotiate airport, M1 works and utility diversion risks. Even fewer could produce a perfect RIDDOR record. And who would consider modernising the industry’s view on inclusive subcontractor training? Adrian Bracken did it all, and more.

Health and Safety Matters, Rising Star – Adam Topham, HSEQ Manager

Adam joined Winvic as a HSEQ manager in June 2017, with 25 years’ industry experience from roles including pipefitting, mechanical and electrical services installation, and managing material and plant for one of the UK’s largest contractors. A facilities management position comprised health and safety in 2011 and he next developed his training skills at a water utilities provider, delivering courses to other organisations.

Adam rejects the ‘humdrum health and safety’ view and focusses on changing perceptions to make tangible differences. His personality shines when delivering his relevant, engaging training, and he never shies from questioning how things are done. Led by solutions, not legislative tick-boxes, Adam knows new ways of thinking can save lives.
